In this program you’ll discover your power in the organization even when you are not in charge and learn about giving feedback to your supervisor to influence a change process and get better results.

Consider how people in organizations typically respond to change. How you respond to change, and how this affects the overall library. Think about expectations around the terms’ “transparency” and “feedback” and how to build stronger relationships within your organization.

At the end of this session, attendees will be able to:

• Understand human systems theory in order to apply these concepts to typical organizational change dynamics
• Analyze your role in your library system in order to consider how you personally contribute to library culture and how you can change current dynamics
• Recognize important concepts of transparency and feedback in order to reconsider how this terminology is used in day-to-day work

Catherine Soehner, MLS, BSN, is the Associate Dean for Research and Director of the Eccles Health Sciences Library at the University of Utah.  Catherine has 24 years of leadership experience in libraries and has worked at the National Library of Medicine, University of California Santa Cruz, and the University of Michigan prior to arriving at the University of Utah in 2011. Her research interests are focused on change management and leadership with publications and presentations focused on systems thinking, conspiratorial thinking in the workplace, and assessment of library programs.  She has published two books, one on effective difficult conversations (2017) and the other on strategic planning (2019).
